Bernice Innes, co-founder of beloved Bedford landmark The Chickenburger, passed away last Friday at the age of 91.
Innes, who became known as the Chicken Burger Lady, started the popular drive-up canteen on the Bedford Highway with her husband Jack on March 10,1940.
In 2007, her family sold the business to Mickey Macdonald. Innes, whose husband passed away more than 30 years ago, resided in the white house behind the Chickenburger until last fall before moving to a retirement home.
A memorial will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Bedford United Church. The restaurant will be closed for that day in her honour. Metro
